Information for short term visas (also called Schengen visas)
Stays up to 90 days

A Schengen Visa allows travel throughout the “Schengen Area” on a single visa for a maximum period of 90 days.

The following countries make up the Schengen Area: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

The exchange of Notes signed on 25 January 1961 between Italy and New Zealand, entitles New Zealand citizens to stay in Italy without a visa for 90 more days irrespectively from other periods spent in other Schengen Countries.
However, New Zealand nationals are advised to carry evidence of the period spent in each Schengen Country in the event the Schengen border authorities will request some proof of the length of stay in each destination. Read here the full text of the Exchange of Notes

Stays for more than 90 days.

Visas of this category allow holders to stay in Italy up to 365 days only for purposes of study, work or permanent residency. Holders of National Visas are permitted to circulate freely in Schengen countries other than the issuing one for a period of not more than 90 days per half-year and only if the visa is valid.
