TONGA. EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE FROM ITALIAN COOPERATION FOLLOWING THE ERUPTION OF THE SUBMARINE VOLCANO AND THE ENSUING TSUNAMI

Italian Cooperation is providing a 100,000 euro donation to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in response to the emergency caused by the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano in Tonga and the ensuing tsunami.

The Italian funding will enable the IFRC to support the work of the Tongan Red Cross, mainly in the water, sanitation and hygiene (known as “WASH”), reception and assistance, and protection sectors. This bilateral initiative is additional to Italy’s contributions to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), which is active in Tonga. With it, Italy intends to offer a tangible sign of its close support for the islands’ most vulnerable people at this particularly difficult time.
