REPATRIATION OR SHIPPING OF MORTAL REMAINS TO ITALY<\/strong>
\n(INCLUDING ASHES\/BONES)<\/p>\n

In order for this Embassy to seek the necessary clearance from the relevant Authorities in Italy for the casket\/urn containing mortal remains\/ashes\/bones to be introduced into Italy, the person in charge of the placement of the deceased\u2019s remains (for example a relative, either in Italy or in New Zealand) is required to provide this Embassy with:
\n\u2022 A statement<\/strong> in writing indicating how said person\/relative wishes to dispose of\/retain the deceased\u2019s remains in Italy (interment in a cemetery, dispersal in a particular location or retention in a place of residence), with full details\/address etc. of the cemetery\/location\/residence.<\/p>\n

\u2022 New Zealand death certificate<\/strong> of the deceased duly apostilled and translated into Italian by the NZ Department of Internal Affairs<\/a> or by a translator registered with the New Zealand Society of Translators & Interpreters;<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2022 Embalming and Transportation Certificate<\/strong>: A Statement by the Funeral Director stating how the remains: (i) were embalmed (in case of burial); (ii) cremated (in case of cremation); (iii) or prepared (in case of bones). The statement should also provide information (dimensions\/materials, etc.) on the container\/s that will be used to transport the mortal remains\/ashes\/bones to Italy and specify that these conform to International standards and regulations. The Funeral Director should finally state that the casket\/urn contain the mortal remains\/ashes\/bones (and only the mortal remains\/ashes\/bones) of the deceased. The Embalming and Transportation Certificate must be translated into Italian by the NZ Department of Internal Affairs<\/a> or by a translator registered with the New Zealand Society of Translators & Interpreters;<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2022 A Statement from the relevant Regional Health Authority<\/strong> (not required for ashes) that there are no contagious or infectious diseases in the region and that the mortal remains\/bones are not affected by such diseases. This statement must be apostilled and translated into Italian by the NZ Department of Internal Affairs<\/a> or by a translator registered with the New Zealand Society of Translators & Interpreters;<\/a><\/p>\n

\u2022 A photocopy of the deceased\u2019s ID document<\/strong> (passport);<\/p>\n

\u2022 Full flight itinerary<\/strong> for the transportation of the mortal remains to Italy;<\/p>\n

\u2022 Payment of the required consular fees<\/strong> (its amount will be quantified after collection and receipt of the entire documentation);<\/p>\n

This Embassy will then issue a mortuary passport and a mortuary certificate attesting that all the requirements for the introduction of mortal remains into Italy have been accordingly met, and which must accompany the urn\/casket.<\/p>\n

\nItalian citizens currently registered in the A.I.R.E. for a period of at least 12 months and who intend to permanently relocate to Italy are exempt from customs’ duties on all personal belongings including furniture and household goods.
