Severe Weather Update – New Zealand

The MetService has issued a Severe Weather Outlook indicating the approach of a tropical low system (Cyclone Vaianu) expected to affect parts of New Zealand, from Friday evening and throughout the weekend.

⚠️ Current alerts issued:

  • Heavy Rain Watchesin the North Island, particularly Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne
  • Strong Wind Watches for wide areas of the North Island
  • Heavy rain risk also identified for parts of the west of the South Island
  • Wellington region: Strong northerly winds and periods of rain are expected. Please exercise caution when moving around the city and remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.

⚠️ Recommendations: We advise to limit non-essential travel in affected areas and to remain cautious due to the risk of flooding, landslides, and strong winds. Particular care is recommended in exposed areas.
