stemmaGENERAL INFORMATION

Italian citizenship is currently regulated by Law no. 91 February 5th 1992 (and regulation for its implementation: specifically DPR no. 572 of 12th October 1993 and DPR no. 362 of 18th April 1994). The law underlines the importance of individual’s will to gain or lose Italian citizenship and it gives the right to hold more than one citizenship simultaneously.

In general, Citizenship legislation applies to

  • descendants of Italian citizens claiming citizenship;
  • foreigners applying for Italian citizenship, mainly by marriage;
  • persons born Italian who have lost their citizenship and wish to reinstate it;
