Schengen Visas

SHORT TERM SCHENGEN VISA: for tourist, business, conference and study stays up to 90 days in the Schengen area

The following countries make up the Schengen Area: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

The following European countries are not part of the Schengen area: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania and the United Kingdom.


  • Citizens of New Zealand, Tuvalu, Samoa, Tonga are not required to apply for a visa to enter and stay in the Schengen area for periods up to 90 days.
  • Residents of New Zealand (with at least 6 months of residual validity of their NZ visa; no application from holders of tourist visas can be accepted) or residents of any other country of secondary accreditation of this Embassy should check online if they require a visa to cross the Schengen borders at:




  • Schengen visa applications must be submitted to the diplomatic authorities of the country which will be the main destination of the trip (in terms of number of days) or the first port of entry should the time spent in two or more countries be of the same length.
  • Schengen visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days. The visa is issued strictly based on the itinerary provided at the interview. Applications cannot be lodged more than 6 months before the date of arrival in the Schengen area.
  • Visas are issued at the discretion of the Embassy. Presentation of the requested documentation does not necessarily ensure the issuance of the visa. The visa office reserves the right to request further documentation/information or further interview, if deemed necessary for the visa application processing.
  • Visa processing time may take up to 15 days from the day a complete visa application is formally submitted.
  • The border authorities may refuse entry to a foreign national (even if in possession of a valid Schengen Visa) who does not have adequate financial means or is unable to provide full details regarding the purpose of his/her stay in Italy, or for reasons of security or public order. Please be advised to take with you copies of the documentation that you initially submitted when applying for the Visa.
  • The Embassy does not make photocopies or print the documentation on your behalf.
  • Supporting documents are accepted only in Italian or English language.



A Schengen visa applicant is required to book an appointment in person to visit our Embassy in Wellington. Appointments can be booked only after an application has received a positive pre-assessment by our visa office.

In order to apply for a pre-assessment and book your visa submisson appointment please email to the following documentation:

  • Print out of the E-VISA Application Form (faster process) or of the standard Visa Application Form;
  • An electronic copy of a valid Passport with at least 3 months validity after expected departure from the Schengen area (the passport must have two consecutive blank pages);
  • 1 recent passport Photo;
  • Full trip itinerary, including border of entry into Italy;
  • Proof of sufficient means of support for the entire stay (current bank balance/statement);
  • Travel insurance (NZ or EU insurer) that covers a minimum of EURO 30 000 for emergency medical expenses;
  • Proof of socio-professional standing: letter from employer and copy of last three pay slips; students will need to present current proof of enrolment; unemployed applicants will need to present a letter from guarantor with a copy of valid ID;
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings) for the duration of stay in the Schengen Area. In case of sponsorship/private accommodation provided by a family member or a friend, applicants are required to present as proof of accommodation a Host Declaration Form duly signed by their host and accompanied by their host’s ID. Hosts must be Italian citizens or must hold a valid Italian residence permit;
  • Proof of Payment of the visa processing fee (i.e. screenshot of your bank account). Payment is required by bank transfer. Please note that the amount of the visa processing fee changes each three months. The applicant is advised to check the correct amount to be paid and our bank details at this link (Please pay amount for Schengen Visa).

Please specify in your email if you have been granted a Schengen visa in the last 59 months, as in this case you may not be required to apply in person at our office in Wellington.

For applications on behalf of children under the ages of 18, please provide a Statutory Declaration signed by both parents and witnessed by a Justice of the Peace (J.P) and a copy of the children's birth certificate (in english).

  • If travelling for business purposes, please provide a Business invitation letter signed by the host company
  • If travelling for study purposes (short courses up to 90 days) or to attend a conference, please provide confirmation of the enrolment or pre-enrolment in the course or in the Conference;

After the positive pre-assessment of your application, the visa office will book you an appointment in order to submit your visa in person at our office in Wellington and invite you to pay the visa fee by bank transfer.

At the appointment, we will collect your biometric data and we will ask you to provide:

  • Your Passport;
  • All the original documentation that you have previously sent via email;
  • Proof of payment (screenshot of your bank account) of the current Schengen visa fee (click here for current visa fee and bank transfer details).
  • Prepaid self-addressed courier envelope with attached “Courier with Signature” label (to be purchased separately) for the safe return of the passport. For rural deliveries please include also a “Rural Delivery label” (also purchased separately). If collecting the passport endorsed with the visa in person a return courier bag is not necessary.

Please note that if you have been granted a Schengen visa in the last 59 months, you will be able to apply remotely by posting all the documentation listed above via courier (PO BOX 463, Wellington 6140). In this specific case, please note that the E-VISA Application Form or the standard Visa Application Form must be signed in front of a Justice of the Peace (JP).
